Sharing the joy of volunteering and Christian fellowship

During CBM Australia’s National Volunteer Week 2019 celebrations, volunteers Piat, Marjorie and Shirley take a quick break to talk about their work and Christian fellowship.
As Piat talks about supporting CBM Australia with mailing, data, transcribing and receipts processing, her smile is never wider than when she talks about the companionship between herself and the other volunteers she works with.
So we asked volunteers Marjorie and Shirley if they’d like to join our discussion.
With all of us settled in the volunteer lounge, we learned that Piat has been volunteering with CBM Australia for six years, and Marjorie and Shirley for more than a decade each.
“I started with CBM 11 years ago,” Shirley said.
“So did I – no, wait – we’ve been here for 12 years now!” Marjorie interjected.
“Oh my! I’d always known about CBM – I even knew people who worked here,” Shirley continued. “But one day at church, I picked up a magazine that was asking for volunteers. So I phoned, and here I am today.”
They all agreed that volunteering at CBM Australia has given them a greater awareness of the needs of people with disabilities around the world, more opportunities to reflect and pray, and an understanding of the impact of CBM Australia’s work.
When we asked Shirley, Piat and Marjorie what they enjoy most about volunteering with CBM Australia, there is a sense of joy that is difficult to put into words.
“It’s the team spirit,” Piat said.
“There’s nothing complex about the work – but there are always jobs that need doing, and we can do them together,” Marjorie said.
