In Bangladesh, people with disabilities often face significant challenges, including limited access to education, employment, and social services. The situation is particularly dire in rural areas, where resources are scarce, and societal attitudes can be less inclusive. Despite these obstacles, many individuals with disabilities strive to improve their lives and contribute to their communities.
One such individual is Shafiqul, a man with a vision impairment in his right eye who was brought up in a family that often faced economic hardships. Due to his circumstances, he could only study up to the 7th grade and had to forgo further education. Life was a constant struggle for Shafiqul, but he never let his disability define him or limit his aspirations.
Shafiqul’s turning point came in 2023 when he became involved in a CBM supported project helping to improve the economic conditions of people with disabilities by providing inclusive livelihood opportunities, mental health support, and wellbeing services.
Through the project, Shafiqul received various types of training, including cattle farming, participation in Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), and capacity strengthening workshops. These trainings equipped him with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue new opportunities and improve his economic situation.
In 2025, Shafiqul received a loan from the project which he used to purchase an auto-rickshaw, a game-changer for him and his family. Now working as a cleaner, the income he earns not only supports his family, but also boosts his confidence and mental strength.
“[The project] has brought light into my dark life. I overcame my financial obstacles, and now my life is going smoothly,” Shafiqul proudly shares.
Shafiqul’s story is part of CBM’s broader work supporting Organisations of People with Disabilities (OPDs) to become strong advocates for disability rights and inclusion in their community. By providing training and access to inclusive livelihood opportunities, CBM and its partners, aim to empower individuals like Shafiqul to become economically stable and access their rights.
CBM Australia acknowledges the support of the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).
