CBM welcomes Australia’s inclusive support of Pacific neighbours

CBM Australia and our supporters welcome the comments of Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Pat Conroy, which states that Australia will rebuild development assistance for Pacific nations and Timor-Leste.
In a speech to the University of the South Pacific, Mr Conroy reiterated a boost to development funding by $525 million over the next four years. Moreover, he said the aid would support “…transparent, sustainable development, led by the needs identified by development partner governments and agencies themselves.”
CBM Australia CEO Jane Edge said: “We are pleased to hear the Minister identify that people with disabilities and their organisations will be consulted about the use of Australia’s increased development funding.”
“Just as important is the Government’s stated willingness to listen to our Pacific neighbours on such critical shared issues like climate change and recovery from the economic impacts of COVID-19. People with disabilities also need to be heard in these discussions.”
Ms Edge concluded: “Minister Conroy’s comments are important steps in reviving Australia’s reputation and credibility as an ambitious global leader in disability-inclusive development.”
