CBM Australia warmly commends the Albanese Government’s landmark $50 million investment through a new flagship initiative – Stronger Movements, Stronger Futures – aimed at strengthening the disability rights movement across the Indo-Pacific.
‘We celebrate this historic investment by the Australian Government,’ said Jane Edge, CEO of CBM Australia. ‘For too long, the disability movement has been under-resourced despite its essential role in shaping inclusive societies. This initiative is not just an investment, it is a signal that the lived experience and leadership of people with disabilities are foundational to systemic change.’
This program builds on the Government’s commitments to strengthen the disability movement and comes on the back of long-term joint advocacy by Organisations of People with Disabilities (OPDs) and the wider development sector to ensure people with disabilities are at the centre of policy and decision-making that impact them.
‘We particularly welcome the investment’s partnerships with International Disability Alliance (IDA), the Pacific Disability Forum (PDF) and ASEAN Disability Forum. As a longstanding partner of all three organisations, CBM Australia celebrates and recognises this initiative as a powerful driver in advancing the voices and priorities of people with disabilities across the region,’ Ms Edge continued.
As we mark the first anniversary of the Australian Government’s International Disability Equity and Rights Strategy, today’s announcement is a strong indication of its ongoing commitment to advancing disability equity through Australia’s aid program well into the future.
