Rights, Justice, Action. For ALL Women.

Every woman has the right to live with dignity, safety, and opportunity. Yet for many women and girls with disabilities, these hopes remain harder to reach. They continue to face unfair barriers that make everyday life more challenging.

Compared with men without disabilities, women with disabilities are:

  • three times more likely to be illiterate,

  • twice as likely to be unemployed,

  • three times more likely to have unmet healthcare needs, and

  • twice as likely to experience violence.

The United Nation’s theme for International Women’s Day, “Rights, Justice, Action. For ALL Women and Girls”, reminds us that rights and justice for all women must include women with disabilities.

Take a moment to watch a message from our CEO, Jane Edge, as she reflects on this important day.

Women and girls who inspire us

This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the women and girls with disabilities we work alongside. Women who are using their strength and insight to shape more inclusive communities.

Saowalak

Saowalak is a long-term disability rights advocate who describes herself as ‘proud to walk by wheel.’ She is the newly elected Chairperson of the ASEAN Disability Forum, a regional organisation of people with disabilities in Southeast Asia and worked on the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Ida

Ida has lived with disability since childhood, but it wasn’t until she started working that she faced direct discrimination. This experience led her to advocacy. Since then, she’s become a journalist, writer, advisor and co-founder of an organisation that provides both disability advocacy and technical support to governments and NGOs.

Nancy

For most of her life, Nancy faced challenges due to societal barriers and lack of opportunities for people with disabilities in her community. This changed when she became involved in a CBM supported project working with a local partner to promote inclusivity and empower individuals with disabilities.

Mrs Thelma

Mrs Thelma is not only an educator, but also a passionate advocate for children with disabilities. As a mother of a child with Down Syndrome, she deeply understands the challenges children with disabilities face and the potential that learning and education can uncover.
