Introducing the Now I Am Safer Campaign

Everyone has the right to be safe during disasters. Yet people with disabilities are often the worst affected when disasters strike. They can be 2-4 times more likely to be killed in a disaster than people without disabilities, and they are frequently excluded from decision-making and planning to prepare for and reduce the risks of disasters. This means that their needs during a disaster aren’t considered so they continue to be left behind. It doesn’t need to be like this and together we can change it. We’re advocating to the Australian Government to make sure that its work to prepare for and respond to disasters overseas is disability inclusive, so that people with disabilities are safer during disasters.
